Legendary Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj passes away at the age of 83

Birju Maharaj was a descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers.

Kathak legend Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away late on Sunday night at his home in Delhi due to a heart attack. He was 83 years old.

Awarded Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, he was affectionately called Pandit-Yes or lord-Yes number of his disciples and his followers, and was one of the most famous artists of India.

According to reports, Birju Maharaj was playing with his grandson late on Sunday night when his health deteriorated and he fainted. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Birju Maharaj’s granddaughter Ragini Maharaj, “He was undergoing treatment for the past one month. He suddenly developed breathlessness at around 12:15-12:30 last night. We brought him to the hospital within 10 minutes, but he passed away. Done.” told ANI.

The Kathak exponent was suffering from kidney ailment and was undergoing dialysis treatment.

Birju Maharaj was a descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, which includes his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and mentor, Achan Maharaj.
