Congress and Azad out

Veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s exit from Congress is a wake-up call for Grand Old Congress Party. The sharp remarks made by Mr. Azad, especially about Rahul Gandhi, are absolutely correct. In fact many opposition parties are reluctant to join hands with the Congress because of Mr. Gandhi’s weak leadership. Since the 2024 general election is a do-or-die battle for the Congress, the Gandhi family should hand over the party leadership to a suitable non-Gandhi leader. Ashok Gehlot could be an acceptable replacement and should be given a free hand to run the show.

The way Mr Azad decided to break away from the Congress, ending his decades-long association, leaves a bitter taste, especially in the way he has publicly aired his views. As a seasoned MP, he should have graciously left the party. In fact, he has done nothing new in defaming Mr. Gandhi. Mr Azad’s former party nurtured him politically and made him a somewhat iconic figure. His act is a case of sheer betrayal.

The tenure of the new Chief Justice of India may be only 74 days, but there is an expectation that he will act according to his discretion, following the rules of law and the principles of the Constitution. We look forward to prompt action and a fair decision.

Judges and Perks

It is shocking that at a time when the issue of ‘free gifts’ has engulfed the judiciary and the executive, the central government has come up with ‘personal free gifts’ for the judges of the Supreme Court. The then government should refrain from any action which could be construed as an attempt to affect the independence of the higher judiciary. However, one may still be tempted to ask the question: why does the government not extend such benefits to the judges of the High Courts as well, with suitable amendments?

coaching capital

It is an exaggeration to project Kota coaching centers as ‘temples of learning’ (p. 1, Aug 28). There are top class coaching institutes across the country which provide better training to the students without stress and exam-oriented method adopted by institutes like Kota.
