upsc exam

This is women’s power with Shruti Sharma, Ankita Agarwal and Gamini Singla topping the 2021 civil services exam (page 1, May 31). It is also heartening that more women are breaking the glass ceiling and gaining significant positions in the corporate world. Too.

It is heartening that women have secured the top rank. Women in leadership positions are a good sign for our country. What is even more gratifying is that young brilliant minds still consider civil services a great attraction. Well done, ladies. Well done UPSC.

It is a matter of happiness that women have performed well as it is a testament to the determination of women to walk the extra mile and achieve success. For decades the All India Civil Service has been a bastion of men. Women are proving themselves to be equally efficient administrators. There is no doubt that success stories will inspire many people to dream big and achieve their goals.

This time women candidates have repeatedly raised the issue. According to media reports, many of them pursued their goals despite problems like additional responsibilities. His success stories will inspire young minds to chase their dreams, no matter what happens.

It is the measure of awareness, progress and progress of Indian women and augurs well for the future of our society. Women have been found to be not only less corrupt but also better administrators – at least from the point of view of the common citizen. Another notable aspect is that more women could start looking for careers in the civil services. One can only hope that this healthy trend continues and more and more women join the civil services.

Kosaraju Chandramouli,

It is heartening that women have performed well in the Civil Services Examination of the Union Public Service Commission. But, at the same time, it appears that the number of successful candidates is decreasing by the year – 685 candidates in the published results. What is happening? I remember that in the late 1970s and 1980s, that is, in my days as a young candidate, it used to be around 800 on average. Whatever be the administrative reforms, one cannot accept that the requirement of personnel is decreasing year after year. Are vacancies being under-reported, causing the government (and perhaps even state governments) to cut spending regardless?

eight year rule

What is it that differentiated Narendra Modi’s eight-year rule from the previous one? This has made Hindutva the center of Indian politics. In no other period since independence has India seen a retreat from secularism as an implementation of the Hindutva agenda as Mr Modi’s tenure as Prime Minister. Now the situation is so alarming that hate speech and targeted attacks are considered a measure of love for the country. Inter-religious relations are now under a lot of strain. The country loses when the Prime Minister is on the wrong side of the ideological battle. As far as the ‘faster path of development’ is concerned, Mr. Modi has said, its benefits have not materialized in improving the living standards of millions of poor. ‘Victim India’ is still waiting for the much-awaited Achhe Din.

booker prize

Ms. Geetajali Shree being given the Booker Prize for her Hindi novel this year comes as little surprise as she was like a dark horse till the very end. Also the award is the first for Hindi. The translator deserves equal praise for the translation. There is no doubt that this award has renewed interest in Indian literature.

AV Narayanan,

Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu

The award has generated interest in Indian languages. It is a fact that there are many talented writers but who write in other Indian languages. They are not known as their stories are not translated into English. Therefore, there is a need for such translators who can popularize the works of these writers. The Tamil Nadu government should translate the works of Tamil writers into English and popularize Tamil literature.
