bill cleared

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s ‘haste’ to give his assent to Tamil Nadu’s Online Gambling Prohibition Bill should be seen in the light of his recent remark: ‘If the Governor does not give assent, it means the Bill is dead ‘. One may wonder whether this was the result of a strong resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly urging the President and the government to clarify things to the Governor. The governor should act as per the principles of the constitution and clear the bills in time without giving any room to believe that people are working against the interests of non-BJP ruled states for obvious reasons.

rss route march

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh may have won a judicial victory for its planned march in Tamil Nadu, but it has come at a high cost. While the RSS, as an organization, has a constitutional right to parade peacefully, its reactionary principles are far from philanthropic. These types of marches never unify but widen existing divisions and do nothing more than impose their will on sections of the population who are unwilling to accept them. It is also useful to recall the victorious “Protestant Orange Order” march through several sensitive Catholic neighborhoods in Northern Ireland, which continues to manifest itself today as a political impasse. In short, all communal marches extolling one’s supremacy over other conflicting faiths are pure propaganda, and a poisonous wedge that drives us even further apart.
