Pension Scheme Changes

Pension scheme has become a ball game in the political arena, in which the lethargy of EPFO is clearly visible. EPFO has not only confused people but also given frustration in the absence of clear guidelines. If our elected representatives were involved, things would get implemented at lightning speed.

community dogs

Heart-wrenching visuals of a video capturing the tragic incident of stray dog attack on a four-year-old boy in Hyderabad should be strong evidence to educate and sensitize and report (‘South’ page, February 22) Organizations that ‘supports the ethical treatment of animals’, its patrons and proponents of the dangers of misplaced empathy as well as the explosion in the stray dog population. Most of the senior citizens out for their morning walk are scared to venture out for fear of aggressive dogs. The owner of a huge dog once said to me: “You’d better take a walk indoors.”

And then there are those who emotionally feed stray dogs to allegedly atone for some past sin. Dog lovers should understand that a dog cannot be taught a moral lesson for being discrete in choosing its target – between an unscrupulous intruder on the street or in the home and a benign passerby.

There is a man in my neighborhood who goes to the extent of sheltering stray dogs in his house when the corporation’s dogcatchers are around. The city administration will have to use the whip.

there was a documentary

Why didn’t the BBC make a documentary on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, asks India’s foreign minister (‘India attempts to shape an extremist idea, PM: Jaishankar’, 22 February). The minister is so sure that he forgets the BBC actually produced such a documentary, 1984: A Sikh Story. Minister reminds us that justice is not being served to the victims of 1984. It is not inconceivable that the same may happen in the case of the 2002 riots. For, in England, as in India, and indeed as in the whole world, in the midst of a struggle for arms, the laws sometimes fall silent.
