This complex maths question aimed at 10-year-olds has the internet stunned

A tricky math question for fifth graders has gone viral on the internet after several adults said they weren’t able to solve it.

The challenge question for students ages 10 to 11 reads: “Klein read 30 pages of a book on Monday and 1/8 of the book on Tuesday. He completed the remaining 1/4th part of the book on Wednesday. How many pages are in the book?” The subject line reads, “A test problem on my 5th grade brother’s math test.”

Social media users were stunned to see the difficulty of the question and many said that they would definitely fail the exam if the questions were so difficult. A lot of users said that they haven’t been able to solve the problem, while some tried their hands at decoding it.

One person commented: “And now we can all see why Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? Worked as a game show.” Another said, “I always think of myself; Uh People really should be tested with basic skills before they are allowed out in society. And then I see it and feel I shouldn’t go out in society!”

However, were also very quick to solve the difficult equation and posted the answer with a step-by-step explanation. A third user took a dig at those who couldn’t solve the problem, writing, “Apparently, the mildly interesting part is the average Redditor is stupid.”

A fourth person who solved it explained, “If Klein started the book on Monday, you can divide 30 pages by five to see what one-eighth is worth, which gives the answer six.” Then you do eight times six which equals 48 – and that’s the right answer.”
