Lewandowski and Benzema on FIFA’s best list

Robert Lewandowski is in the running to retain his FIFA Best Men’s Player award after being named on Monday to the 11-man shortlist along with Karim Benzema and Jorginho.

Nominees include perennial nominees Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Neymar, Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe also up for the award first given in 2017.

The list of potential winners includes Erling Haaland, N’Golo Kante and Kevin De Bruyne.

Four players from Barcelona have been included in the women’s best player shortlist – Alexia Putelas, Jennifer Hermoso, Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen.

Chelsea, defeated by Barcelona in last season’s Women’s Champions League final, also have four representatives with Sam Kerr, Ji So-eun, Magdalena Ericsson and Pernil Harder.

Lucy Bronze, who won last year’s award, was nominated along with England international Ellen White.

Canada’s Olympic gold medalist Christine Sinclair is in a similar vein to Sweden’s Stina Blackstenius.

Thomas Tuchel is leading the race for the best men’s coach after leading Chelsea to the Champions League title.

He is up against Roberto Mancini, the mastermind of Italy’s Euro 2020 win.

The other nominees are Hansi Flick, Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte, Diego Simeone and Argentine boss Lionel Scaloni.
