Lightyear, a startup developing electric cars based on solar power, has announced $110 million in a round of funding that will enable Beira to bring its own vehicle to markets. It was originally a group of engineering students from the Technical University of Eindhoven competing in the World Solar Challenge with their Stella and Stella Lux energy positive solar cars. These cars were producing far more energy than they used to.

Solar Team Eindhoven also recently unveiled a Solar RV, but Lightyear has graduated to becoming more of a full-fledged automotive player than a college project. The project that was announced in 2019 promised an electric sedan with integrated solar cells and enabled it to deliver a massive 725 km range based on the WLTP cycle.

“We have reached a funding milestone of $110 million with the help of Cooperation DELA, one of the largest international insurers in the Netherlands. This investment aligns with their long-term focus on sustainability. Together, we are committed to clean mobility. We can work on our shared mission of bringing this to everyone, everywhere,” the company said.

“It is great to see acknowledgments from investors, which is a testament to their trust in Lightyear. Thanks to the trust and funding we have received from our investors, we as a company can grow and bring our Lightyear One exclusive model market in 2022,” said company CEO and cofounder Lex Hofslut.

It still plans to market the first units in 2022, but it should be noted that the car will not be cheap as it will cost around $100,000 to $170,000 for a starting price.
