In safe hands: tortoise handed over to forest department

Colva: Villagers of Benaulim together with parish priest of Holy Trinity Church rescued an injured olive ridley tortoise and handed over to forest department officials.
According to Pele Fernandes, the fishing community offered a Mass at the church on Wednesday to mark the feast of St. Peter and Paul.
The members then visited the village’s New Waddy Beach with Father Anthony Rodrigues to bless the sea.
As he finished the religious ceremony, he saw a tortoise, which was caught in nets and ropes. Some villagers immediately jumped into the sea and saved the turtle and cut the nets and ropes.
Since the front left side of the flipper was injured, they immediately called the forest officials and handed them over for treatment.
Range Forest Officer Prakash Naik confirmed that villagers have handed over a turtle to Reefwatch, an agency set up to protect and treat the endangered species.
