Lok Sabha Election 2024 Voting Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to vote in record numbers during the second phase voting for Lok Sabha Election 2024 that took place in 88 parliamentary constituencies spread across 13 states and Union Territories (UTs) on April 26. The Prime Minister especially urged young voters and women voters to turnount in great numbers citing ‘high voter turnout strengthens democracy’

Congress leaders, including Malikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi also issued voting appeals while saying that this election was to ‘save the constitution’.

The voting began at 7 am and will continue until 5 pm. 

Till 5 pm, Tripura continued to lead the voter turnout (77.53%) charts, while Uttar Pradesh has registered the lowest turnout with 52.74 per cent, according to the data released by the Election Commission of India on Friday.

The states of Manipur (76.06 per cent), and West Bengal (71.84 per cent), Chhattisgarh (72.13 per cent) and Assam (70.66 per cent) have also registered healthy turnouts till 5 pm.

As many as 15.88 crore voters are eligible to vote in this phase. The voters include 8.08 crore men, 7.8 crore women and 5,929 third-gender electors. The voters also include 3.28 crore young voters in the age group 20-29 years. This includes 34.8 lakh first-time voters registered to cast their votes in this phase.

As many as 109 seats had gone to polling in the Phase 1 on April 19. The first phase recorded a voter turnout of around 62 per cent. The counting of votes for all seven phases of Lok Sabha Elections will be held on June 4.

The seats going to polls on April 26 include all 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala, 14 in Karnataka, 13 in Rajasthan, eight each in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, seven in Madhya Pradesh, five each in Assam and Bihar, three each in West Bengal and Chhattisgarh and one each in Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and Tripura.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor, the BJP’s youth icon Tejasvi Surya, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, actor-turned-politicians Hema Malini and Arun Govil, and the speaker in the outgoing Lok Sabha, Om Birla are among 1,210 candidates in the fray in Phase 2 of the Lok Sabha elections.

Over 16 lakh polling officials have been deployed across 1.67 lakh polling stations in this phase. Webcasting will be done in more than 50  per cent of the polling stations along with the deployment of micro-observers in all polling stations.

Overall, voting for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases. The last phase will be held on June 1. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is seeking a record third term under PM Narendra Modi, has set a target of winning 400 seats this election. The ruling alliance is challenged by the opposition parties led by the Congress under the banner of the INDIA bloc.

 

The counting of votes for all seven phases of Lok Sabha Elections will take place on June 4.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: PM Modi says ‘Phase Two has been too good!’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that the phase two of the Lok Sabha polls has been “too good” for the BJP-led NDA, describing the support to the ruling alliance as unparalleled. 

He said on X as polling ended, “Phase Two has been too good! Gratitude to the people across India who have voted today. The unparalleled support for NDA is going to disappoint the Opposition even more.” “Voters want NDA’s good governance. Youth and women voters are powering the strong NDA support,” Modi said. 

The prime minister had made a similar assertion after phase one of voting on April 19, saying the ruling alliance has seen a great response. It is clear that people across India are voting for the NDA in record numbers, he had said.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Tripura leads with 77.53% voter turnout till 5 pm; UP at lowest with 52.74%

Tripura continues to lead the voter turnout charts in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections with 77.53 per cent voting till 5 pm, while Uttar Pradesh has registered the lowest turnout with 52.74 per cent, according to the data released by the Election Commission of India on Friday. 

The states of Manipur (76.06 per cent), and West Bengal (71.84 per cent), Chhattisgarh (72.13 per cent) and Assam (70.66 per cent) have also registered healthy turnouts till 5 pm. Maharashtra (53.51 per cent), Bihar (53.03 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (54.83 per cent) and Rajasthan (59.19 per cent) are the states with relatively low turnout. 

The voter turnout of other states are– Kerala (63.97 per cent), Karnataka (63.90 per cent), Jammu and Kashmir (67.22 per cent). Voting for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 began at 7 am on Friday across 88 Parliamentary Constituencies spread over 12 States and Union Territories.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: SP’s Akhilesh Yadav says ‘There is a long fight ahead on VVPAT, EVM…’

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav said on Friday that the fight for the removal of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), currently used in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, is a ‘long’ one. Yadav, who recently announced his candidature from the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency, also said that though everyone will accept the SC’s judgment on EVMs, the fight against the polling machine will not stop. 

“There is a long fight ahead on VVPAT, EVM, and ballot paper. Whatever decision the Supreme Court takes, everybody will accept that, but the fight won’t stop. The fight will go on,” the SP chief said while speaking to reporters in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj. 

His remarks came after the Supreme Court rejected all the petitions seeking the complete verification of votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) machines with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips on Friday.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: State registered  64.73% at 5.20 pm on Friday

With less than an hour remaining for the conclusion of polling in the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, the state registered a turnout of 64.73 per cent at 5.20 pm on Friday. 

Kerala saw a voter turnout of 77.84 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. To reach that figure this year, the turnout has to see an increase of over 13 per cent in the remaining 40 minutes of polling. Huge queues were seen outside polling booths across the state, with voters complaining that the election process was going on very slowly. 

During the day, the first hour of voting saw a turnout of close to 6% and thereafter, every hour saw an increase of 6% to 7% in the turnout.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Nearly 60% voter turnout was recorded till 5 pm

Nearly 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 5 pm in 13 Lok Sabha seats of Rajasthan where polling is underway under the second phase on Friday. Barring a few incidents of confrontation and complaints of fake voting in Barmer-Jaisalmer, the voting is being held peacefully. 

According to the official data, 59.19 per cent voter turnout was recorded in 13 constituencies of Barmer-Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Jalore, Chittorgarh, Banswara, Kota-Bundi, Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Pali, Udaipur, Rajsamand, Kota and Jhalawar-Baran. 

At the same time, 73.25 per cent voting took place in the byelection for Bagidora assembly constituency of Banswara district.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Man damages EVM at polling booth in Maharashtra

A 26-year-old man allegedly damaged an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) by hitting it with an iron object when he came to cast his vote at a polling booth at Rampuri in Maharashtra’s Nanded district on Friday, a police official said. 

The police detained the man, who told them that he wanted a pro-farmer and pro-labourer government, he said.

 “The man, Bhaiyyasaheb Edke, is a local resident and a registered voter of Rampuri booth. He came to the polling booth to cast his vote, but damaged an EVM with an iron object. He was immediately detained and the voting process continued soon afterwards as the broken machine was replaced with a new one,” Nanded Superintendent of Police (SP) Shrikrushna Kokate told PTI.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024:  Madhya Pradesh records 54.42 pc voter turnout till 5 pm

Madhya Pradesh recorded 54.42 per cent voter turnout till 5 pm in the second phase of polling for six parliamentary seats in the state, according to the data released by the Election Commission of India. 

The polling for the six parliamentary seats –Tikamgarh (SC), Damoh, Khajuraho, Satna, Rewa and Hoshangabad– began on Friday at 7 am in the state and it would conclude at 6 pm.

 Of these, Hoshangabad is leading the voter turnout charts with 63.44 per cent voting followed by Tikamgarh 56.24 percent, Satna 55.51 per cent, Damoh 53.66 per cent, Khajuraho 52.91 per cent and Rewa 45.02 per cent till 5 pm so far in the state.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024:  ‘55.25 % voter turnout till 3 pm, lowest turnout in Maharashtra’

A voter turnout of over 50 per cent was recorded till 3 pm in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections which was underway in 88 seats across 13 states amid complaints of EVM glitches and bogus voting in some booths in Kerala and West Bengal. 

Voters in some villages of Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, Rajasthan’s Banswara and Maharashtra’s Parbhani boycotted polls over various issues. Polling for the second stage of the seven-phase elections started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. Several states are experiencing intense heat conditions. 

Election officials said the highest voting percentage was recorded in Tripura which registered 68.92 per cent polling till 3 pm, while the lowest turnout was in Maharashtra at 43.01 per cent. “Aggregate turnout at 3 pm in Phase 2 is 50.25 per cent,” the Election Commission said in a statement.

Voting for the second phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is scheduled for April 26, 2024, in 88 constituencies across 13 States and Union Territories. The general voting hours are from 7 am to 6 pm, though timings may vary depending on the constituency.

In several constituencies in Bihar, including Banka, Madhepura, Khagaria, and Munger, the polling hours were extended until 6 pm to accommodate voters due to hot weather conditions. These 88 constituencies include 73 general, 6 scheduled tribe, and 9 scheduled caste seats.
