Longest kiss world record contest closed, Guinness explains why

New Delhi:

Did you know there was also a ‘world record for longest kiss’ category? Guinness World Records deactivated it in 2013 because the competition had become too dangerous and some of the rules conflicted with the record keeper’s current and updated policies.

The rules for the Guinness World Record for the longest kiss were as follows:

– As noted in the Guinness World Records, “The kiss must be continuous and lips must be touching at all times.” If the lips parted then the couple would be disqualified. Competitors are permitted to consume liquids through straws during the attempt, but the lips must not be parted.

It is necessary for the couple to remain awake all the time.

– They must remain standing during the attempt and cannot be held together by any support.

– No rest leave is allowed.

– Adult nappies/diapers or incontinence pads may not be worn. The couples were allowed to use the toilet, however, they had to keep kissing while doing so.

Guinness World Records stated that since no rest was allowed, and the breaking of records took longer, participants were at risk of succumbing to the dangers associated with lack of sleep, such as psychosis.

There have been many cases when the contestants had to suffer the side effects of pulling stunts.

In 1999, Israel’s record holders Carmit Tzubera and Dror Orpaz were “barely conscious” after kissing for 30 hours 45 minutes. Although he won the competition, he was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was treated for fatigue. Carmit and Dror won a trip around the world and $2,500 (Rs 2,06,775) in cash.

One of the contestants – in the 2004 contest – had to be “resuscitated with oxygen.” 37 year old Andrea Sarti (Italy) kissed his girlfriend Ana Chen (Thailand) for 31 hours 18 minutes.

In 2011, a woman was eliminated after just 30 minutes in the competition.

The world record for the longest kiss was set in 2013 by Thai couple Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat. Their kiss lasted for 58 hours 35 minutes. The couple – who had earlier won the record in 2011 – won the grand prize of 100,000 Thai baht (Rs 23,465) and two diamond rings worth 100,000 baht (Rs 2,34,650).

The Guinness World Record replaced the world record for longest kiss with the longest kissing marathon.
