According to the 2019 National Family Health Survey, around 70 percent of children and 65 percent of women in India suffer from iron deficiency. Low iron consumption means less production of haemoglobin. For those unaware, hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein present in red blood cells and is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. Dr. Manoj K. of Fortis Hospital According to Ahuja, “Low hemoglobin leads to weakness, fatigue, headache, shortness of breath and much more. In addition, significant drop in hemoglobin leads to a condition like anemia.” This is why, loading up on iron is so important – and if you look around, there are many fruits and vegetables that are readily available and can provide you with a good amount of iron.

5 interesting ways to eat iron, suggested by Namami Agarwal:

1. Amaranth:

Both the seeds and leaves of amaranth are rich in iron, calcium, protein vitamins A, B and C. You can make porridge, laddoos, parathas and have it as tikkis for your evening snack.

2. Jaggery:

Unlike sugar, which contains empty calories, jaggery is rich in iron, magnesium and potassium. Apart from providing iron, jaggery also helps in digestion and gives relief from menstrual cramps.

3. Spinach:

Spinach is rich in both iron and calcium. You can experiment with spinach and add it to your smoothies or make spinach soup.

4. Vitamin C:

Include more and more vitamin C rich foods in your diet. It helps in better absorption of iron in your body.

5. Cook in Iron Pots:

If you want to get the most out of these iron-rich foods, make sure you cook them in an iron pot.
