LUDHIANA: In the result of an inspection conducted by the State GST (SGST) department on a tobacco trader on April 4, the department had seized a mysterious suitcase from the premises where the action was taken. During the investigation, when the suitcase was opened on Tuesday, officials were surprised to find more than Rs 26 lakh in cash and USD 1,240 in it.
Giving more details, Assistant Commissioner State Tax (ACST) Range-4 Dr Sumandeep Kaur said, “In pursuit of the instructions of Commissioner of Taxation Punjab Kamal Kishore Yadav, several startling aspects have come to the fore during the ongoing investigation in respect of the dealer. Do business of tobacco products in Hargobindnagar area of ​​Ludhiana. During inspection, huge discrepancies were found in the records and stock and a suitcase was also seized which was later opened in the presence of the owner. Huge cash currency of more than Rs. 26 lakhs and foreign exchange of 1240 US dollars was found, which has been deposited in the government treasury.
Kaur also said, “A thorough investigation is being done by the officers of Ludhiana-4 and the seized cash has been handed over to the Income Tax authorities for further legal action. To widen the scope of the investigation, the forward and backward transactions of the dealer are being scrutinized.
On the other hand, Randhir Kaur Deputy Commissioner State Tax Ludhiana Issued a warning to tax offenders today in which he said that the department is taking strict action against defaulting firms and they ensure voluntary compliance.
