Shah said that after decades of fighting Maoists, has reached a point where the annual death rate is below 200 for the first time. There has been an 82% drop in the death rate from an all-time high of 1005 in 2010 to 183 in 2020. The area under the Maoists’ influence decreased from 96 districts in 2010 to 53 in 2020. These crooks have been pushed into only a few pockets. 85% of Left Wing Extremism violence takes place in 25 districts of the country.
Shah said the fight against Left Wing Extremism was now at a critical stage and the government was hopeful of reducing the menace at the earliest. He said the fight against the problem has reached its end and it needs to be intensified and decisive.
The Home Minister said that to completely get rid of the problem of Left Wing Extremism, there is a need to ensure full development of the country and its affected states. So, instead of being satisfied with what we have achieved so far, we need to accelerate to get what is left, he told the chief ministers.
The Chief Ministers of Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand and the Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh attended the Naxal review meeting held on Sunday. Senior officials have been roped in to attend Chattisgarh, West Bengal and Kerala. Union Minister of Rural Development, Tribal Affairs, Communications, IT and Railways; Ministers of State for Road Transport and Home Affairs were also present.
