The MacPherson strut is a modern-day auto suspension system highly loved by automobile manufacturers for its versatility and affordability.

The MacPherson strut suspension system is named after a famous American car engineer, Earl S. McPherson. He conceptualized this suspension system and then developed the final design, which is used in many modern vehicles. Since its introduction, this suspension system has attracted the fancy of automobile manufacturers. While McPherson designed this suspension system for Chevrolet Cadet cars, he moved to Ford as the project ended in 1947. The first production car to sport a MacPherson strut suspension was the Ford Consul in the year 1950, followed by the Zephyr.

MacPherson developed this suspension system to be used on all four wheels; However, it is usually only used for the front suspension.

The MacPherson strut sports an extremely basic design. It has a control arm and a radius rod that forms a triangle with the chassis of the car.
