A court in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur has sentenced a school headmaster to five years in jail for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a guest teacher.

Special Public Prosecutor KK Gautam said Special Court Judge Sudhashu Sinha on Saturday convicted Chandrabhan Sen under the Prevention of Corruption Act and also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him.

Sen, the headmaster in charge of a government middle school in Surajpur Kalan, about 65 km from the district headquarters, had taken a bribe of Rs 2,000 from guest teacher Laxmikant Sharma to allow him to attend work. Sharma lodged a complaint with the Sagar Lokayukta police on January 6, 2015, and Sen was trapped two days later.

“Public servants indulging in corruption is a huge problem which is destroying the society. Corruption was shaking the very foundation of democracy and rule of law. Justice Sinha, in his order, said that showing leniency towards such accused is against the law and the need of the hour is to take a tough stand.

In his plea in the court, prosecutor Gautam sought strict punishment saying that a teacher is an important part of the society and a guide and if a teacher indulges in corruption then it will be harmful to the society.
