The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition filed by Tamil TV actor Arnav Amjath in a case registered against him for assaulting and harassing his wife actress Divya Sridhar. Arnav had stated in his petition that he and Divya had a love marriage, and after their marriage, Divya often argued with him, wrongly accusing him of having an affair with another actress.
In the petition, he said that it is wrong to claim that he assaulted and harassed Divya. The petition also states that the police did not act on their complaints and instead registered a case based on Divya’s statement.
During the hearing in the Madras High Court, the police produced Divya’s medical documents before Justice G Chandrasekaran. It was revealed that there were injury marks on Divya’s body. After verifying the evidence and hearing arguments from both the sides, Justice Chandrasekharan decided not to quash the case against Arnav.
Justice Chandrasekaran said the case against the actor cannot be quashed as a detailed probe was required.
Last year, the police took Arnav Amjath into custody following a complaint by his wife Divya Sridhar. She filed a case at Chennai’s Porur police station accusing Arnav of ill-treatment, harassment and extra-marital affair. On 14 October 2022, Arnav was called to the police station and then taken into custody. An FIR has been registered against him for assault and harassment under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Two years ago, a video of Arnav and Divya also went viral on social media, in which the couple was seen arguing with each other. In the video, it can be heard that Divya was shouting at a girl – who is allegedly Arnav’s girlfriend – asking her to stop interfering in their lives.
Arnav and Divya got married after being in a relationship for five years. The couple kept their marriage a secret until Divya became pregnant. After a year of marriage, their relationship soured. According to Divya, Arnav was having an illicit relationship with a co-star. She started posting footage on social media to expose Arnav’s alleged extramarital affair. She said that she did everything she could to get justice for herself and her 3-month-old baby.
