A rebel Shiv Sena MLA on Saturday said the latter will legally challenge the move if Uddhav Thackeray does not withdraw his decision to remove Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde from the post of ‘Shiv Sena leader’. Shiv Sena president and former chief minister Thackeray on Friday removed Shinde from the post of “Shiv Sena leader” alleging his involvement in “anti-party activities”.

In a letter, Thackeray said that Shinde had “voluntarily” given up the membership of the party, so “in exercise of the powers vested in me as Shiv Sena party president, I remove you from the post of Shiv Sena leader in the party organisation”. . Deepak Kesarkar, who is the spokesperson of the Shinde faction, told reporters in Goa, where they are currently camping, that if Thackeray does not roll back the decision, legal action will be taken.

“All the elected MLAs have appointed Shinde as the leader of the group. His removal as the leader of the assembly group has also been challenged in the Supreme Court. We will give a legal reply to Thackeray,” Kesarkar said. He said Shinde is now the leader of the assembly as chief minister. “We have decided that we will not respond to any statement by Uddhav Thackeray. He is our leader and we respect him,” said the Sawantwadi MLA.

Shinde’s faction is expected to return to Mumbai tonight in the special session of the Legislative Assembly beginning on Sunday.
