Like romance and action, religion has also been the subject and background of countless films in Indian cinema. From ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960), ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977), ‘Oh My God’ (2012) and ‘PK’ (2014), there have been many films flouting religion-based themes. And directing a film with a religious plot, many makers have paid tribute to Lord Shiva in one form or the other over the years. As Mahashivratri approaches, it is the best time for devotees to re-watch the below movies that celebrate the magical powers of the deity, also known as Neelkanth.

1. Except:

The Ajay Devgn-starrer ‘Shivaay’ is a must-see for any Shiva devotee as it deals with the human element of God. In the film, Ajay played the role of a mountaineer named Shivaay. With the film released in 2016, Ajay, who also helmed the project, tried to portray Lord Shiva’s flaws apart from his goodness. “He smokes, drinks cannabis, kills randomly when he goes wild, then realizes he’s made a mistake, people can even fool him. He’s good at heart. When he turns violent he is terrible. What are these human beings. Shiva, I think is the only God who has all the elements,” Ajay had said in an interview.

The title track of the film ‘Bolo Har Har’ is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and proves that the film depicts Lord Shiva as the destroyer of all evil. Interestingly, Ajay is a staunch follower of Lord Shiva in real life as well. Reportedly, he has got a big tattoo on his chest which is the symbol of Om along with the face of Shiva.
