Mahal says no decision has been taken on which crown Camilla will wear at coronation – Times of India

London: Buckingham Palace haven’t decided on CamillaThe queen consort will wear the crown of the wife, who wears the priceless kohinoor diamondAt his coronation the following May.
The Queen Mother was crowned in 1937 when she was Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI. It contains the 105.6-carat Kohinoor diamond, one of the world’s most famous jewels, in a detachable platinum mount.
The diamond was taken as war booty after the defeat of the Sikhs in the second Anglo Sikh War In 1849 and was presented Queen Victoria by Lord Dalhousie
After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, the Kohinoor was enshrined in the Crown of Queen Alexandra and then transferred to the Crown of Queen Mary in 1911 and finally in the Crown of the Queen Mother in 1937 as her consort. was re-established. There is a legend that diamond brings bad luck hence it is never worn by the king.
On Thursday, the Daily Mail reported that there was political sensitivity around Camilla’s wearing of the crown, particularly in relation to India, due to disputes over ownership of the diamonds claimed by India and several other countries. “His Majesty the King is extremely sensitive to these issues, as are his advisors,” the Mail quoted an anonymous source as saying.
While Buckingham Palace did not issue any formal statement, palace sources told TOI that no decision has yet been taken about the crown to be worn by Camilla. The coronation of King Charles III and the Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
While the Queen Mother’s crown is part of the crown jewels in the Tower of London – now owned by King Charles III – the crown is not part of the coronation reign, sacred objects used during coronation ceremonies, such as the Sovereign Scepter Cross and with St. Edward’s Crown.
Co-author of the book Kohinoor William Dalrymple said, “If she wears it it will undoubtedly bring humiliation to India.”
“This is a major diplomatic grenade. It is a good thing that the British have finally understood this because till now there is no recognition in Britain about how sensitive it is. It is a good thing that these talks are happening now because Britain was about to commit a big crime without its knowledge. British-Indian relations continue to deteriorate due to misunderstandings on both sides.
The diamond itself is displayed in the Tower or London so that it can be taken out of the crown.
“I think it’s worse to remove the Kohinoor diamond from the Queen Mother’s crown, so she’ll probably wear another crown. I think she’ll probably wear the Queen Victoria crown, which is smaller, or her tiara,” Said author Shrabani Basu, who wrote “Victoria and Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confident”.
“I can see why the Royal Family would not want her to wear the Queen Mother’s crown as it would spark controversy again. The UK Government would probably agree to this. The last time the crown was displayed was at the Queen Mother’s funeral. and it caused quite a stir as there were fresh calls to return it to India. It is not an easy answer whether it should return to India as there are many claims to it. It is probably the best in the Tower of London left, in which the origin of the diamond is clearly stated.”
