Mumbai: Maharashtra 132 new coronavirus cases were reported on Saturday besides six pandemic-related deaths. XE VariantsThe state health department said.
The number of infections in the state rose to 78,75,080 and the death toll rose to 1,47,816.
On Friday, Maharashtra had 130 cases and four deaths. A 67-year-old Mumbai resident, who had traveled to Vadodara last month, had contracted the new XE variant of the coronavirus, a health official said, adding that it was reported by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC).
“This person was tested for COVID-19 as he was suffering from mild fever during his Vadodara visit on March 12. Now the patient is completely asymptomatic and stable. He has taken both the doses. Cowishield vaccine. Contact tracing of this patient is in process,” the official said.
The XE variant is a combination of BA.1 and BA.2 strains omicronand is known to be more permeable than other strains.
The health department in its release said that frequent changes in genomic structure are part of the natural life cycle of the virus, and there is no need to panic, but precautions should be taken.
Meanwhile, 135 patients have been cured in the state since last evening and the total number of cured patients has increased to 77,26,461.
The recovery rate in the state is 98.11 percent.
Maharashtra now has 803 active cases. Zero active cases were reported in Sindhudurg, Sangli, Nandurbar, Latur, Hingoli, Nanded, Washim, Yavatmal and Bhandara districts on Saturday.
Of the six fresh deaths, four were reported from Pune district, while one was reported from Nashik city and other parts of Nashik district.
The case fatality rate in Maharashtra is 1.78 per cent.
With 57,016 tests conducted since last evening, the number of coronavirus tests conducted so far in the state increased to 7,96,66,245.
