The move is particularly significant as it comes amid the ongoing political tussle between Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra over the true legacy of ‘Hindutva’.

Maharashtra will now celebrate May 28 every year as Savarkar Gaurav Diwas, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced. The decision was taken after the demand was raised by his minister Uday Samant a few days back.

The move is particularly significant as it comes amid the ongoing political tussle between Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra over the true legacy of ‘Hindutva’.

“May 28 is the birth anniversary of Swatantryaveer Savarkar. The state government has decided to celebrate it as Swatantryaveer Gaurav Diwas, where programs will be organized to disseminate the thoughts and ideas of Swatantryaveer Savarkar. His contribution to the freedom and progress of the country has been incomparable. Maharashtra minister Uday Samant had demanded that Savarkar’s patriotism, courage and progressive thoughts should be paid tribute by celebrating such a day.

The decision comes at a time when Eknath Shinde and his government have been criticized by the opposition for failing to respect the views of Veer Savarkar. The government had earlier announced to organize Savarkar Gaurav Yatra across Maharashtra.

Savarkar is an important issue in the ongoing battle between Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray over the true legacy of Hindutva and the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray.

Eknath Shinde has criticized Uddhav Thackeray for compromising on the core ideology of Shiv Sena and Balasaheb Thackeray. The issue came to a boil recently after Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Savarkar sparked a controversy in Maharashtra.
