MUMBAI: In a fight for political unity, the two-member cabinet of the Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis governments on Saturday re-approved the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts. It also gave a fresh nod for the naming of Navi Mumbai International Airport. The proposals were earlier approved by the MVA government in its last cabinet meeting, but the new Shiv Sena-BJP government has maintained that those decisions were illegal.
The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister said that the earlier MVA government was in a minority and was asked by the Governor to prove its majority, so it could not take the decision to change the name. When the minutes of the MVA cabinet meeting came before the new cabinet for confirmation, the executive was directed to bring a fresh proposal.
Shinde said the proposal to rename Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar, Osmanabad to Dharashiv and Navi Mumbai International Airport after DB Patil has been approved by a cabinet which has the support of 162-164 MLAs. “The proposal was approved once again so that there is no legal hurdle as the previous government was in minority,” Shinde said.
Fadnavis said the proposal would now be brought before the state legislature as a resolution and once passed, it would be sent to the Center for approval.
Shinde, who was the urban development minister in the MVA government, had put up a proposal before the CIDCO board to name the new airport after late Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray as the head of CIDCO. Then CM Uddhav Thackeray did not approve it.
Welcoming the decision to name the airport after DB Patil, MNS MLA Pramod (Raju) Patil demanded from Shinde and Fadnavis that the MVA government filed an agitation during the demand to name the airport after DB Patil. Cases should be withdrawn.
