Maharashtra’s most water-stressed region sees more rainfall this year

Marathwada, which is considered a drought-prone region in Maharashtra, received 1,041.5 mm of rainfall this year against an average of 679.5 mm during the monsoon season, while heavy rains continued in some parts of it, an official said on Saturday.

He said that the region has received 153.27% rainfall so far. Officials have earlier said that at least 91 people have died in Marathwada in the past four months due to excess rains, while over 2.5 million hectares of farmland have been destroyed.

Marathwada comprises eight districts – Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Jalna and Hingoli. “In Marathwada, isolated parts of four districts received heavy rains between Friday and Saturday.

In the 24 hours ending at 12 noon on Saturday, Vihamandwa circle of Paithan tehsil of Aurangabad district recorded the highest rainfall of 107.25 mm.

Since Friday, 12 circles in Aurangabad, Beed, Jalna and Parbhani districts have recorded over 65 mm of rain, the official said.

Apart from Vihamandwa, Aurangabad, Balanagar (Aurangabad district), Ramnagar, Jamkhed, Talani (Jalna district), Beed circle and Sirsala (Beed district) received heavy rains.

It rained in Takli-Kumbhakarna, Kupta and Sonpeth in Parbhani. He said that due to heavy rains in Naregaon area of ​​Aurangabad there has been water logging and flooding.

The water level of the biggest Jayakwadi dam in the region reached 99.06 per cent on Saturday morning. Eighteen gates of the dam have been raised to a height of 1.5 feet and there has been an increase of 9,432 cusecs in the discharge of water into the Godavari river with a total discharge of 28,296, an irrigation official said.

Aurangabad Guardian Minister Subhash Desai took stock of the rain situation in the district through video conferencing on Friday.

Talking about the review meeting, Collector Sunil Chavan later in a video message said, “63,000 farmers of the district have suffered losses due to heavy rains in the last week of September.
