Mahela Jayawardene, Shaun Pollock, Janet Brittin to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame cricket news

Sri Lanka great Mahela Jayawardene, former South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock and former England batsman Janet Brittin will be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame ahead of the T20 World Cup final to be held here on Sunday. The three cricketers will be formally inducted by the ICC Hall of Famer, Sir Clive Lloyd, before the much-awaited final between New Zealand and Australia begins at the Dubai International Stadium. The ICC Hall of Fame recognizes the achievements of stalwarts of the sport from the long and illustrious history of cricket. Since its introduction in 2009, 106 players have been included, with Briton, Jayawardene and Pollock being the latest.

The Briton, who died in 2017, was a mainstay of the England Test team for 19 years and paved the way for women’s cricket between 1979 and 1998.

Jayawardene retired as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest players of all time, a key member of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2014 and reached four other major ICC finals.

Pollock was one of the finest bowling all-rounders the game has ever seen and was the first to achieve a 3,000-run and 300-wicket double in both Test and ODI cricket.

Responding to the news of the Brit’s induction, her friend Angela Bainbridge said: “I want to thank the ICC for the incredible honor they have bestowed upon them by inaugurating the Hall of Fame in January.

“I’m incredibly proud of her and her achievements, along with Jan’s parents Maggie and Kevin, and this award recognizes both the player and the person she was.

“You could not wish to meet a more humble or talented player and he has always given 100% whether he plays for club, county or country. It is sad that Jan himself has not been able to pick up this trophy, But he will always be remembered.”

Jayawardene follows Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan into the Hall of Fame. “It is a very special honor to follow in the footsteps of Sri Lanka legends Sanga and Murali and many other great cricketers of the past.

“I am so grateful for the recognition and want to enjoy and share this moment with all the people who have helped me in my journey, including my family, friends, coaches, teammates and most importantly That Sri Lankan cricket fans enthusiastically supported and inspired me throughout my career,” he said.

Pollock said: “It is an amazing honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with a very wonderful company that has already been inducted.

“It’s a real cherry on top or maybe even the end of a book which has been an utterly enjoyable cricketing experience and I want to thank my teammates who played such a big part during the journey.”
