The breach affected the system for processing TransServ transit benefits that reimburse government employees for certain commuting costs.

A data breach at the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) exposed the personal information of 237,000 current and former federal government employees, sources said on Friday.

The breach affected the system for processing TransServ transit benefits that reimburse government employees for certain commuting costs. It was not clear whether any personal information was used for criminal purposes.

The USDOT said in a statement to Reuters that the breach did not affect any transportation security systems. It did not say who might be responsible for the hack.

The department is investigating the breach and access to the transit benefit system has been blocked until it is secured and restored, it said.

The maximum benefit allowance for federal employee mass transit costs is $280 per month.
