Malayattur Perunal: History

Malayattoor Perunal is steeped in history and tradition, dating back to the arrival of St. Thomas in Kerala in 52 AD. History states that St. Thomas encountered angry locals when he was passing through Malayattur, and in an attempt to escape, he climbed to the top of a hill where he was praying.

While he was chanting he left his footprint on a rock and touched a rock which started bleeding. The festival was revived in the 18th century after the Syrian Christian community gained control of their church from the Portuguese.

Since then, the festival is celebrated in Kerala, and attracts thousands of devotees from all over India and abroad.
