E-commerce frauds are on the rise in India, with the latest victim being a man from Kerala. This time it happened to a man from Aluva, Kerala, who ordered an Apple iPhone 12 from Amazon, but got a soap bar and a five-rupee coin instead.
Victim Nurul Amin told Mathrubhumi.com that the amount he had paid to buy the phone using an Amazon Pay card has been credited to his account. A regular Amazon customer, he ordered the smartphone on October 12th after paying ₹According to Mathrubhumi, 70,900 through his Amazon Pay card and received the package on 15 October.
However, he got suspicious after the package stayed in Salem for a day after it was sent from Hyderabad. Most of the packages reached Kochi from Hyderabad in two days, but it took three days to order their iPhone 12. On suspicion, he opened the box in front of an Amazon delivery partner and shot a video while doing so. He told Mathrubhumi that the items felt similar in weight to an iPhone.
The package contained the popular dish-washing bar Vim, a piece of soap, and a bar ₹He had ordered a 5 coin instead of the iPhone 12. Amin immediately called up Amazon customer care and filed a police complaint. Police started investigation and found that someone in Jharkhand was using iPhone since September 25. It was 15 days before Amin booked the phone.
“We contacted Amazon officials and the Telangana based seller. The phone has been in use in Jharkhand since September 25 this year, although the order was placed only in October. When we contacted the seller, he said that the phone was not in stock and the amount paid by Noorul would be refunded,” a police officer told The New Indian Express.
Amin told Mathrubhumi that the amount was credited to his account, which he had paid using an Amazon Pay card. Kerala Police also said in a Facebook post that the seller returned the money to Amin. He said the amount was deposited in his account last Thursday and investigation is on in the matter.
