NMC validates compulsory rotating internships completed or started on or before October 21, 2022 in the list of old MCI-approved colleges

The National Medical Commission (NMC) issued a notification on January 4, validating Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) as per the old Medical Council. India (MCI) list. The commission said that any foreign medical graduate completing or commencing their required rotatory internship in recognized medical universities, or hospitals, as per the pre-MCI, on or before October 21, 2022, will be accepted. However, it must be noted that such internship will be valid only as a one-time measure.

The move by NMC comes after several requests and representations from the concerned students. The Commission emphasizes that any internship commencing in a non-teaching hospital after this date will be treated as invalid. The notification can be viewed by the concerned students on the website of NMC at nmc.org.in.

The National Medical Council announced in March 2022 that it would allow graduates in medicine or related fields to complete their CRMI in India. As per the provisions mentioned by the NMC, foreign medical graduates must complete two internships before being allowed to practice medicine in India: one in the country where they earned their MBBS and the other in India.

According to the Indian Express, several medical students had challenged the NMC’s decision on CRMI in November last year. He claimed that this would compel students, who have obtained their UG course completion certificate before June 30, 2022, to complete two years of internship instead of the customary one. On the other hand, the NMC said it would compensate for the loss of clinical training brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new NMC list of approved colleges for internships was published in October 2022, leaving students applying to institutes that used the previous MCI list in a quandary. Such students will feel relieved from the decision made as per the most recent NMC notification, which confirms to end or start CRMI only in the MCI-approved list on or before October 21, 2022.
