A state-wide agitation demanding justice for Athuan Abonmei, a social activist of the Zeliangrong tribe, on Wednesday led by Chief Minister N. This ended after an agreement between Biren Singh and the leaders of the Joint Action Committee constituted to demand justice for him. Abonmei, who attended a government function in Tamenglong on 22 September, was kidnapped under the nose of the police and later murdered. Mr Biren, who also holds the Home Office, says he was not informed in time, as a result of which Abonmei could not be saved.

The official report points to agreements on six points. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into the abduction and murder of Abonmai will continue. An officer not below the rank of Additional Chief Secretary will conduct the inquiry and submit the findings to the NIA. Abonmei’s son will be placed in the police department. One graciously ₹10 lakh will be paid to the bereaved family. A memorial stone will be erected for Abonmei. The police will cooperate. The dead body will be claimed for performing the last rites.

Mr Biren had only transferred the District Collector (DC) and the Superintendent of Police in-charge and this was not acceptable to the tribals and non-tribals who organized the statewide agitation. On Wednesday, the Tosem Students’ Union and the Kuki Students’ Union, Jiribam and Tamenglong branches said that if the DC and SP were not suspended, national highways would be blocked by protesters, and construction work would be carried out on national projects in tribal areas. interrupted. There are reports of tribal women taking out processions in support of the demands of tribal students.
