Manipur violence: ‘1700 houses burnt, 60 dead’, says CM Top Update

The violence-hit north-eastern state of Manipur shared an update on the situation in the state on Monday with the chief minister. The CM told that 60 innocent people had lost their lives in the violence. The toll is a jump from the previous collected figures, which stated 54.

The CM further said that 1700 houses were burnt and a total of 231 people were injured in the violence that broke out after May 3.

“I appeal to the people to bring peace and calm in the state. The work of taking the stranded people to their respective places has started. All persons stranded at various places in Manipur are being provided best possible care and assistance in safe places and shelter camps.” CM Biren Singh Gave information to reporters on Monday evening.

“Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been monitoring the situation since the day of the incident till date. They have sent several companies of central forces.”

Expressing concern over the loss of life and property, the Supreme Court asked the Center and the Manipur government to step up efforts for relief and rehabilitation of people affected by caste violence in the northeastern state, besides protecting places of worship.

The apex court fixed May 17 as the date for hearing the matter.

-More than 23,000 people have been rescued and given shelter in military cantonments and relief camps. CM Biren Singh Said that 20,000 stranded people have been evacuated till Monday, and about 10,000 people are still stranded.

Apart from the massive deployment of security forces, helicopters and drones are being used to monitor the situation.

Curfew was relaxed for a few hours in state capital Imphal on Monday morning after which people came out of their homes to buy essentials, marking some normalcy in the violence-hit state.

SG Mehta told the Supreme Court, flag marches have been conducted in disturbed areas. He also informed that the Manipur government appointed IAS officer Vineet Joshi as the new chief secretary of the state amid caste violence.
