Maoist activist in 12-day police custody

A local court in Udupi district’s Karkala sent them to 12-day police custody after Maoist leaders BG Krishnamurthy and Savitri were produced before a magistrate on Wednesday.

Both are accused in 13 criminal cases registered at Karkala Rural, Hebri and Ajekar police stations in Udupi district. A team of Udupi Police had brought him from Chikkamagaluru. A large number of police were deployed in the Karkala court complex.

In November 2021, the National Investigation Agency arrested Krishnamurthy and Kabini Dalam Area Commander Rajit alias Savitri from an area bordering Karnataka and Kerala. He was an accused in 21 cases related to Maoist activities in Kerala. The District and Sessions Court in Thalassery sent both to the Viyur Jail in Kerala.

Krishnamurthy, a native of Sringeri, and Savitri, a native of Kalasa in Chikkamagaluru district, were recently taken for questioning by the Chikkamagaluru police in connection with 30 cases, including those registered under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Workers Prevention Act.

Karkala police will interrogate two Maoist leaders in connection with the death of teacher Bhojshetty and Bhojshetty’s relative Suresh Shetty in a Maoist attack in Nadpal on May 15, 2008.

The duo will also be questioned about the death in the Maoist attack on farmer Keshav in Hallihole in Kundapur taluk on December 7, 2008. He is suspected of being involved in the murder of Sadashiv Shetty at Tinagalamkki near Khabinale on December 19, 2011; In one case of threatening to kill Kutty Shetty of Mutlupady and also in a case of blast that damaged a police vehicle at Muttavu near Hebri.
