Benchmark indices fell for the third consecutive day on Tuesday with the Sensex falling over 153 points amid largely weak global markets, as investors remained cautious ahead of the crucial outcome of the Federal Reserve meeting. Unabated foreign fund outflows also weighed heavily on the domestic equity markets. Sensex closed at 52,693.57 for the third day. It closed 387.22 points or 0.73 per cent lower at 52,459.48 during the day. Nifty closed at 15,732.10, down 42.30 points or 0.27 per cent.
