Death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi: On this day in 1948, Nathuram Godse assassinated Gandhi in the courtyard of Birla House in Delhi.

Death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi: Martyr’s Day or Martyr’s Day is observed on 30 January. This day marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. On this day in 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse in the premises of Birla House after one of his regular multi-faith prayer meetings. Godse, a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, blamed Gandhi for taking the side of the Muslim community during the Partition of India in 1947. He shot Gandhi three times in the chest and stomach. It is said that Gandhiji’s last words were “Hey Ram”.

‘Only my death will tell that…’

  1. “Do I have the non-violence of the heroic? Only my death will tell. If someone kills me and I die with prayer for the murderer on my lips, and the remembrance of God and the consciousness of His living presence in the sanctum of my heart, then alone will I be called the non-violence of the brave. Gandhi said a few days before his assassination.
  2. A lawyer, politician, leader, social reformer and a nationalist, Gandhi is one of the key figures of the Indian independence movement.
  3. “Satya” or Truth and “Ahimsa” or non-violence were his two most important guiding principles and were also his weapons which he used against the British Empire to secure India’s independence.
  4. He was also an advocate of minority rights and devoted his life to building and strengthening communal harmony, especially between the Hindu and Muslim communities.
  5. For his unique contribution, he is considered as the Father of the Nation.
  6. He is also fondly remembered by the name of Bapu.
