Mayor election to be postponed to February 16, Delhi LG office tells SC

Delhi’s lieutenant governor’s office told the Supreme Court on February 13 that it would be adjourned Mayor election on 16 February By a date after 17 February.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, which on February 17 heard a petition filed by AAP mayoral candidate Shelley Oberoi seeking early mayoral elections, said that nominated members cannot vote in the election.

“Nominated members cannot go to the polls. The constitutional provisions are very clear,” the bench said.

As the apex court bench posted the matter for hearing on Friday, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, representing the LG’s office, said that the February 16 election be postponed to a date after February 17 .

The top court had on February 8 sought response from the lieutenant governor’s office, pro tem presiding officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Satya Sharma and others on Ms Oberoi’s plea.
