Roshan failed to clear the exam in his first four attempts. Despite this, he continued putting in efforts and emerged successful, when he appeared for the fifth time in 2018. Roshan Kumar became an IAS officer after he secured All India Rank 114 in the UPSC Civil Services examination 2018. After being disappointed four times, he accomplished the feat which should be accredited to his efforts to rise against all the adverse situations. The numerous challenges on his path couldn’t affect his ambition. The reason why he stands apart from his contemporaries is that he had a full-time job, while he was preparing for the exam.
Roshan, during a media interaction, reflected on his journey. He said that “it is indeed challenging to juggle a demanding job with UPSC preparation, but it is not impossible.” He firmly believes all that is required to crack the exam, while also holding a full-time job, is proper time management. Roshan also revealed his strategy to prepare for the exam and said that he used his time efficiently to study and revise.
Instead of making a full-time job an excuse, he viewed it as a positive aspect of his preparation journey. Acknowledging that the mindset of working for a company enabled him to fight all the challenges that came his way, Roshan said that the “skills and experiences gained from his job complemented his UPSC preparation.”
Another key piece of advice by Rohan is to keep your UPSC preparation a secret from everyone. He says that no one should know about your plans, except your immediate family members as sharing your goals and aspirations may lead to unrealistic expectations ,which creates pressure on the mind. Roshan advises that for those looking to clear the civil services exam, it is necessary to maintain a low profile while working hard in silence.
