Meghalaya: Partner Konrad Sangma splits engagement

Marks of Meghalaya Konrad K. Meghara sealed the agreement between the ministers on Thursday. He retained the key group as the NPP, while allies were given portfolios considered less politically important. Sangma has retained Finance, Forest, Political, Personnel, IT and Mines and Geology portfolios, according to a notice issued by Chief Secretary DP Wahlang. One of the two deputy chief ministers, Preston Tynsong, was given the portfolios of Home, PWD, Zilla Parishad Affairs and Panchayat Affairs.

Another Deputy Chief Minister S Dhar has been given the charge of Urban Affairs, Transport, Industries and Prisons and Correctional Services. M Empire Lyngdoh, the only woman in the state cabinet, has been given Health and Family Welfare, Law, Information and Public Relations and Agriculture departments. BJP minister AL Hek has been given the portfolios of veterinary, fisheries, printing and stationery and related administration. The UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh has been given the portfolios of Social Welfare, Tourism, Arts and Culture, while his party colleague Kirmen Shayla has been issued the Excise, Revenue and Legal Metrology portfolios.

The order said that the Sports and Youth Affairs, Labour, Registration and Stamps departments have been given to Shakliar Varwari of the HSPDP. The agreement was announced after the first cabinet meeting of the new government headed by Megha. Meanwhile, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh was appointed chairman of the state planning board. Sticking to the ‘Peeti-Bhasha’ about the bifurcation of Tripura, he said, “When the UDP’s support came, it was a little late and the view of the place in the cabinet was almost complete.” He said that the two-member People’s Democratic Front did not get any ministerial berth.
