Meghalaya Speaker approves merger of 12 Congress MLAs with TMC

Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Thursday approved the merger of 12 Congress MLAs with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).

The decision was taken on the petitions filed by Dr. M. Amparin Lyngdoh for disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.

“After examining in detail all the 12 petitions filed by the petitioner Dr M Amparin Lyngdoh, MLA and the comments received from all the 12 respondents, I am satisfied that the merger of 12 members of the Indian National Congress is valid as provided under Paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India, and does not attract disqualification. I find no merit in the petitions filed by MLA Dr. M Amparin Lyngdoh, and hence, the same is dismissed,” said Speaker Metba Lyngdoh said in an order issued on Thursday.

12 MLAs- Dr Mukul Sangma, Marthan Sangma, Jimmy Sangma, Lazarus Sangma, Miyani Shira, HM Shangpliang, George Lyngdoh, Winerson Sangma, Dikanchi Shira, Zenith Sangma, Charles Pygrope and Shitlang Pale had submitted the letter of merger. Speaker on 24th November

Congress, on the other hand, had challenged the merger and sought disqualification of the MLAs. CLP leader Majel Amparen Lyngdoh had on November 29 filed a petition with Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh seeking disqualification of 12 defected MLAs.

Two separate petitions were filed against the merger by the Congress, one filed and presented by Congress Legislature Party leader Dr M Amparin Lyngdoh on 29 November. On December 10, two more petitions were filed and submitted to the Speaker against the two MLAs.

Meanwhile, Dr M Amparin Lyngdoh has decided not to pursue the petition seeking disqualification of the defecting MLAs. However, he said that the decision in this regard rests with Vincent Pala, president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.

“My personal view is simple, Hon’ble Speaker has decided and I respect his order. I will not pursue this petition as priority will be given to our campaign in 2022.”

“However, the party may have a different view on the matter. Our President will decide on this and we will wait for his decision on this matter.”
