Meghalaya: UDP, PDF extend support to Conrad Sangma

Sangma confirmed the news by posting pictures with members of the UDP and People’s Democratic Front (PDF).

Ahead of the new government formation in Meghalaya, regional parties led by the United Democratic Party (UDP) extended their support to National People’s Party (NPP) President Konrad K Sangma just 36 hours before he was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Meghalaya. . ,

Sangma confirmed the news by posting pictures with members of the UDP and People’s Democratic Front (PDF).

Taking to Twitter, Sangma said, “Thank you UDP and PDF for coming forward to join NPP to form the government. Strong support from domestic political parties will strengthen us to serve Meghalaya and its people.”

At around 6 pm today, UDP Vice President AF Dakhar along with other MLAs submitted a letter of support to Konrad Sangma and Sangma confirmed the development.

PDF leaders had also gone to Sangma’s residence on Saturday night to submit their letters of support.

Earlier, two MLAs of BJP, HSPDP and two independents had supported NPP.

Despite opposition to the ‘Khasi Chief Minister’ in Meghalaya, the United Democratic Party later in the evening extended support to the NPP-BJP-led alliance.

According to sources, the UDP is bargaining for three cabinet berths for its MLAs. While PDF and HSPDP are likely to get one cabinet minister post each. Even the BJP is likely to get one, though it will again be on a rotation basis.

Along with this, the NPP will reserve 5 cabinet berths and the chief minister’s post for itself.

Now the NPP-led coalition has 45 elected members – including 26 NPP, 11 UDP, 2 BJP, 2 HSPDP, 2 PDF and 2 independents.

The opposition will be left with 14 MLAs, including five each from TMC and Congress and four from VPP.

Sangma is going to become the Chief Minister for the second consecutive time on 7th March. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will also be present.
