Mercedes has become the fourth team on the grid to announce the launch of its 2022 car. The eight-time constructors’ champion is expected to be the favorite again, even though there are many murmurs in the paddock that thanks to a combination of things – Ferrari may have the fastest car at the start of the season. Interestingly, Mercedes will launch the W13 on February 18, a day after Ferrari launched its 2022 car.

The full name of the car that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will drive is Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 E Performance. One of the car’s major differences will be the fact that Mercedes may return to its iconic silver livery instead of the black one adopted by the team in light of the “Black Lives Matter” movement. In December, Mercedes also became the first team to tease their car and now we have a date.

Mercedes is said to have been developing the W13 for some time and has given up on development for the W12 marginally given the new ground-effect aerodynamics, new F1 budget cap and engine development freeze for this car. Mercedes will have the shortest wind tunnel and CFD test times according to the new rules, as it is the constructor’s champion.

The launch around the car is also overshadowed by the possibility that the 7-time world champion and statistically the most successful F1 driver of all time, Lewis Hamilton, could make it out of the game. Hamilton whose bid to win a record-breaking 8th world title was crushed after a safety car at the last minute of the final race of the 2021 season and some controversial calls by FIA stewards gave Max Verstappen a major advantage, who took Fair advantage and overtook the Briton.

Since then, Mercedes launched an appeal which it withdrew but its CEO and team principal Toto Wolff indicated that Hamilton could not return to the sport, despite being contracted for two years. It is reported that Mercedes has struck a deal with the FIA for the removal of FIA race director Michael Massi and for more organizational changes.

It has also been reported that Hamilton could only return after seeing what reforms the FIA has made under the new commission it has set up. For its part, the FIA will release some preliminary findings on February 3, two weeks before the car’s unveiling, but the full breadth of the report will only be submitted by March 18 which will be in time for the opening of the season in Bahrain.
