Met Gala 2023: New York welcomes showbiz, other elite for fashion’s party of the year

Fashion’s party of the year is finally here — A-listers gear up to celebrate the late king, Karl Lagerfeld, at Monday’s annual Met Gala, whose red carpet serves as the year’s ultimate spectacle of glitz and excess.

The glamorous event – which sees hundreds of celebrities strutting down the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for one night that raises millions of dollars each year – is sure to light up social media with over-the-top looks.

The guest list that brings together the elite from the worlds of fashion, film, politics and sport – along with a growing list of online influencers – is rigorously curated by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who co-hosted the charity gala in Was handled 1990s and turned it into one of the busiest fetes in the world.

Already early in the day, fans were gathering under blue skies on New York’s iconic Fifth Avenue outside the museum to get the best vantage point to see the stars.

“We got here at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning,” said Joseph Pogoda, an 18-year-old university student. Like his music, like Lil Nas X.”

This year, the extravaganza — which has always fallen on the first Monday of May, save for a pandemic-era schedule change — celebrates Lagerfeld, and marks the opening of a Costume Institute exhibit dedicated to the iconic designer, whose 2019 had died.

“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” is set to pay tribute to Chanel, Fendi, Chloé and his decades in the industry at the helm of his own line while shaping the future of fashion.

Celebs in attendance are expected to wear on-theme dresses, which will probably mean a parade of vintage silhouettes from the German-born designer — who himself is known for his signature sleek black suits, white-powder ponytails, and dark glasses.

Of course, Lagerfeld isn’t controversy-proof — despite his public struggle with his weight, he criticized curvy women. And late in life, he mocked the #MeToo movement and those who came forward with sexual misconduct claims.

Curator Andrew Bolton said, “The show is really focusing on Carl, his deeds rather than his words.” “We have not included any of his more controversial or offensive comments.”

– ‘Immense talent’ –

The night is expected to be full of Lagerfeld fans and his famous friends.

Wintour, who has been close to Lagerfeld for decades, will of course appear in Chanel, as she always does.

Carla Bruni, a former model and one-time first lady of France, told AFP at the press preview for the Lagerfeld exhibition that “it is an honor to be here today to celebrate the extraordinary career of my dear friend.”

He remembered Lagerfeld for his “immense talent,” “creative power” and “bewitching charm,” but most appreciated him for his “kindness.”

This year the high priestess of fashion invited actors Penelope Cruz and Michaela Cole, retired tennis legend Roger Federer and pop phenom Dua Lipa to co-chair the gala.

The guest list is being kept secret until the main event, but around 400 people are reportedly expected to turn up.

On Fifth Avenue, Pogoda said he was hoping to see Oscar-nominated actor Austin Butler (“Elvis”), or Kim Kardashian’s “momger” Kris Jenner.

The ball is by invitation only, with single tickets costing $50,000 and tables starting at $300,000.
