Miami Open: Daniil Medvedev reaches last 16

Daniil Medvedev scored a comprehensive straight-sets win over Spain’s Pedro Martínez in the last 16 of the Miami Open on Monday.

The Russian top-seeded remains the favorites for the title and their 6-3, 6-4 win was as clinical as Andy Murray’s knock out of the tournament in the previous round.

He will face American youngster Jenson Brooksby or another Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the quarterfinals.

Martinez competed well but once he was broken by Medvedev in the middle of the second set, the defending US Open champion never looked back and won in an hour and 24 minutes.

“I hit 14 aces and I loved it, the second set was tough but I managed to stay consistent,” Medvedev said during a courtside interview.

This 26-year-old will reclaim the world number one ranking by making it to the semi-finals in Miami.
