Microsoft calls a “new day” for search as AI-powered Bing challenges Google

Unveiling the new search engine and browser with AI copilot, Satya Nadella said, “The new race starts today.”

Redmond, US:

Microsoft’s long-struggling Bing search engine will integrate the powerful capabilities of language-based artificial intelligence, CEO Satya Nadella said Tuesday, in what he called a new era for online search.

“It’s a new day for search…the race starts today,” Nadella said at a launch event. AI bot created by the developers of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT has delved into Artificial Intelligence technology (AI) to test the bot’s abilities with over 100 million users, getting the results of essay, speech, or law exams within seconds, with teachers and school officials concerned about cheating. The reason is the race for gold.

Microsoft hopes that strengthening Bing with ChatGPT will fundamentally update online search by providing answers crafted using multiple sources, rather than the familiar list of links to external websites.

“We applied the AI model to our core search ranking engine, and we saw the biggest jump in relevancy in two decades,” said Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of Microsoft.

OpenAI, a California-based startup founded in 2015, developed ChatGPT. Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and has signed a new multi-billion deal with the firm with funding from Elon Musk.

Search is Google’s golden cash cow and any serious challenge to its dominance seemed unthinkable until ChatGPT emerged two months ago.

Google’s search engine holds an 84 percent share of the global market, brings in billions of dollars in advertising sales every quarter and makes up more than two-thirds of the tech giant’s total revenue. Bing’s market share was just nine percent last year.

– ‘Shot on the bow’ –

According to reports, Google declared the massive success of ChatGPT a “code red” threat to the company, reassigning teams to brainstorm a quick answer and speed up ongoing research on AI.

Buoyed by the unexpected rivalry, Google on Monday shrugged off Microsoft’s announcement that it was about to deliver its own version of ChatGPT, a bot named Bard that would also provide instant replies to requests.

Chinese search engine giant Baidu said on Tuesday it was preparing to launch an AI-powered chatbot called “Ernie Bot”, although the launch date was unknown.

“We see this as the first shot across the bow in this Big Tech AI battle that looks set to hit its next gear of investments in the coming months,” said Dan Ives of Waybush Securities.

Despite the new arms race in Big Tech, ChatGPT and similar bots continue to make mistakes and it’s unclear whether the technology, known as generative AI – will be able to completely replace search. that we currently know.

Google has already integrated more conversational technologies into its search engine, including providing easy-to-click answers to questions often associated with search requests.

Prior to the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI impressed tech enthusiasts with Dull-E2, software that creates digital images with simple instructions.
