Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said in a tweet on Saturday night that he had written a letter to the central government proposing to include millet in the mid-day meal scheme, which has now been approved.

I thank the Central Government. Now school children in 12 districts of the state will get bajra-based food products four days a week in place of soya chikki.

The official said the state’s Directorate of Public Instruction had sent a proposal to the Center to distribute millet-based products in place of soya chikki under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Yojana, which was approved.

He said that now millet-based food products would be distributed four days a week in schools in 12 districts of the state.

The official said farmers in Chhattisgarh are being encouraged to cultivate millets like kudo, kutki and ragi, which are being procured at support prices.

Besides this, an input subsidy of Rs 9,000 is being provided to millet producing farmers in the state.

The central government announced on January 1 that it has rolled out a series of millet-centric promotional activities across the country as part of the International Year of Millets.
