Minister inaugurates Indoor Stadium at Madurai Medical College

An indoor stadium on the premises of Madurai Medical College was inaugurated by Health and Family Welfare Minister M. Subramaniam here on Tuesday.

Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister P. Murthy and Finance Minister and Palanivel Thyaga Rajan were also present.

Earlier, he interacted with the beneficiaries who have received bone transplants through the bone bank at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), where a total of 36 bones were received as donations since last December. “Seven patients, including two young players, were successfully treated at GRH and given a new lease of life,” he told reporters.

The newly inaugurated indoor stadium was set up by the Alumni Association at a cost of ₹3.30 crore.

He elaborated about 23 special projects announced in Madurai district at a total cost of Rs 110.48 crore. He said this includes allocation of Rs 36.60 crore for purchase of additional medical equipment for GRH.

He also said that since the launch of the ‘Innuyir Kapom’ scheme, 3,185 persons have been admitted to the GRH and have been treated successfully. “More than ₹3.05 crore was allocated for his treatment. Whereas in the state, 96,807 persons injured in accidents were treated in government and private hospitals for which ₹87.34 was sanctioned. They said.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Subramaniam along with Mr. Murthy inaugurated four primary health centers at Perungamanallur, Uthapuram, Malappuram and E. Kottaipatti, each at a cost of Rs 25 lakh.

Dean of Medical College and Hospital A. Rathinvel, Collector S. Anish Shekhar, Mayor V. Indrani Pon Vasant, MLA A. Venkatesan (Solavandan), M. Boominathan (Madurai South) and others were present.

COVID-19 vaccination

Talking about the Kovid-19 vaccination, he said that a total of 95.51% people in the state have been given the first dose of vaccination against Kovid-19, while 88.52% people have received the second dose of vaccination.

“For Madurai, the first dose and second dose of vaccination are 86.20% and 75.08% respectively, making it the city with the lowest vaccination rate in the state,” Mr Subramanian said.

He assured that the district administration and health officials are taking serious steps to increase the vaccination rates.

He said, “While there are about 30.35 lakh, 92.14 lakh and 3.45 crore people in the state who have not yet received the first, second and booster respectively.

He urged people to get their booster shots free of cost for all adults for 75 days from July 15, for which earlier they had to pay ₹386.25 per shot.

“Booster shots were given on Sunday in the mega vaccination camps organized at 50,000 centers across the state, out of the total 18.8 lakh beneficiaries who received the vaccination, more than 11 lakh,” Mr. Subramanian said.

Apart from this, a similar immunization camp will be organized at 50,000 centers on 7th August.
