Minister praises ‘Stanlin Spirit’

A total of 252 students of 2016-2022 batch graduating from Government Stanley Medical College received degree certificates from the Health Minister Ma. Subramaniam on Wednesday 79 th Graduation Day Celebrations on Wednesday.

The minister traced the history of the hospital and later the college, serving the locality. He recalled the achievements of surgeons and specialists who had launched hospitals, medical universities and served as Union ministers.

He said that this institute is famous for inculcating the ‘Stanlin Spirit’ in the students. He recalled an incident in 1975 when a dispute between a student and a bus conductor on Route No 37 took a serious turn with the student allegedly hitting the conductor.

That day nine college students had traveled by that bus. Transport officials went to the extent of taking legal action against the student. “The conductor was asked who hit him and the employee replied that the student had shaved his head. The next day when the students were called for the identification parade, all the nine students along with their college mates came with their heads shaved.

North Chennai MP and college alumnus Kalanidhi Veerasamy, Royapuram MLA Idreem R Murthy, Greater Chennai Corporation’s Town Planning Committee member Ilya Aruna, besides Director of Medical Education R. Narayan Babu and senior college officials participated.
