Minor’s engagement stopped in Kirimanjeshwara

A team of personnel led by Child Development Project Officer Shweta stopped the engagement of a 16-year-old girl in Kirimanjeneshwara on Friday.

According to officials, on a tip-off, the team went to the place where the engagement was to take place.

The members explained to the girl’s parents that engagement of a minor girl would mean encouraging child marriage. The girl’s parents gave an undertaking that the marriage between the boy and the minor girl would take place only when the girl attains the age of 18 years. The personnel also warned of legal action against the girl’s parents if they go ahead with the marriage.

The girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee, Udupi, which directed the authorities to keep the girl in a suitable institution.
