Mission 2047

As India ushered in a period coveted as the Amrit Kaal, this year’s Independence Day speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi took aim at corruption, nepotism and gender inequality, but mainly for the next 25 years. To set goals and encourage the nation to work. To make India a developed country by 2047.

Even after 75 years of independence, many of our people are still living in poverty. To uplift their lives our economy needs to grow to its full potential so that we have enough pie to distribute. While economic expansion has been in focus for more than three decades, our prospects have diminished somewhat over the past decade, with the income gap at risk of falling into the middle-income trap. Great dedication, thinking for ourselves, unity and solidarity, pride in our heritage and our duties as citizens, the five aspects of nationalism on which Modi asked us to strengthen our resolve, are relevant in various ways. But the challenge is to ensure development in a way that is socially and environmentally sustainable. There is a need to focus more on equitable outcomes. At the same time, our citizens are being left behind.
