LUCKNOW: The Bharat Bandh call given by the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) as part of the ongoing protest against agricultural laws received a mixed response on Monday. In some areas, markets remained closed for some time, while in some areas processions were taken out and roads were blocked. In eastern and central UP, it was business as usual as the bandh did not have much effect.
In Lucknow, SKM and their allies from various trade unions and social organizations, including the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), gathered outside Begum Hazrat Mahal Park, raising slogans against the central government for not paying heed to their demand to take back the fields. protested. Markets remained closed on Monday in Etawah
The leaders decided to address the gathering standing at the road divider, which eventually ended in a brief road blockade. However, all markets in Lucknow city remained open as traders opted not to close their shutters in support of the Kisan Bandh.
Members of the Bharatiya Kisan Shramik Janshakti Sangh along with their leader Kalmesh Yadav blocked the Bitholi crossroads on the Lucknow-Sitapur road. A similar protest was organized by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) democratic leader Rakesh Chauhan in the Mal area on the outskirts of the state capital. Reports in Sitapur and Kanpur said protesting farmers submitted memoranda to the district administration addressed to the Center, demanding the withdrawal of agricultural laws.
Farmers led by leaders of BKU and All India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha (AIIMS) demonstrated in rural areas of Prayagraj.
In Dhoomanganj, women supporters blocked the road, which blocked the Prayagraj-Kanpur highway for hours. Attempts to block the road in Shankargarh, Koraon, Bahria, Sarai Mamrej located on GT Road, however, were foiled in the presence of heavy police force. However, business in the city remained largely unaffected.
The bandh call had no significant impact in and around Varanasi.
Almost all the shops in Lalpur market remained open. Grain, fruit and vegetable markets in Deoria were temporarily closed as a mark of solidarity with the protesting farmers. In Farrukhabad, farmers gathered at the Christian College and in a procession reached the Collectorate where they submitted a memorandum to repeal the agricultural laws.
