MNC Jobs, High Pay – After IITs, IIMs, lesser-known private colleges are upping the placement game

New Delhi: If you thought that hot paid jobs in some of the top global companies only go to IIT and IIM graduates, think again. Some lesser-known private colleges are rising to the top of the placement game, offering their young graduates starting salaries of Rs 20 lakh and above.

Hoardings of such private institutions, filled with pictures of smiling students, advertisements for their placement programs can be seen across India.

GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management and Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology (NIET) are two such colleges in Delhi-NCR. Based in Greater Noida, this year their advertisements claimed that their students were offered starting salaries of Rs 40 lakh and above.

Such packages for students from lesser-known private institutions may make one wonder whether the claims are authentic. After all, they are not an IIT or even a well-known private engineering college like BITS Pilani, where the starting salary packages offered to graduates range from Rs 10 lakh per annum to Rs 1 crore.

ThePrint looked into the claims and found that it is not just GL Bajaj and NIET, but many others have achieved similar feats this year.

A look at the private engineering colleges ranked between 140 to 200 of the central government National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) shows that at least 10 of them have recorded their highest package in the range of Rs 20-45 lakh, as per information received from these institutions.

The biggest salary package among most of these institutions is offered by Amazon, which has hired students as software development engineers. According to September 2021 news reports, Amazon was planning to plans To create 20 lakh employment opportunities in India by 2025.

ThePrint reached out to Amazon by email, but had not received a response at the time of publishing this report. This article will be updated upon receipt of response.

Talking about placements, Ajit Singh, head of NIET’s career management cell, said that the institute assumes that it will not have any IITs or other elite colleges to its name, so it works extra hard on its students.

“We pay great attention to soft-skill training of our students and making them job ready. We run a number of programs in collaboration with the industry so that students can get first-hand experience of the work they are going to do. We have also tied up with Coursera to get relevant skill certificates for our students,” he told ThePrint.

placement game

Ranked 145th on NIRF, NIET mentions on its website that four of its students got a package of 44.5 LPA (Lakh per annum), all of them placed with Amazon. It has touted it on several billboards in NCR.

Anurag Srivastava, a NIET student who joined Amazon this year, said the institute helped him and three others do internships with the online retail giant, after which he was hired.

“We were hired by Amazon after we successfully completed our internship there. Our college helped us with relevant skills, which helped us in our work,” said Srivastava, who is working as a software developer earning 44.5 LPA.

Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College in Vijayawada, Andhra, No. 141 in NIRF ranking, is listed 44 LPA as the highest offer from Amazon on its website. However, the average salary package for the institute was 4.8 LPA.

Anurag University in Hyderabad (ranked 140) also listed its highest package from Amazon at 38.5 LPA on its website.

GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management (ranked 195th on NIRF) also had four student land salary packages in the range of 44-47 LPA from Amazon.

According to Arvind Kumar Bhatt, Media and Public Relations Coordinator at GL Bajaj, they focus on preparing students for the industry so that they can get good placements.

“We consult with the industry on what their requirements are and train our students accordingly. We give them certificates in addition to the regular courses. We also work on their soft-skills and communication skills,” He told ThePrint.

Hyderabad’s Vardhman College of Engineering (ranked 162 in NIRF) listed on its website an LPA package of Rs 42.6 from Walmart Global Tech, and Rs 39 LPA from Amazon.

The Silicon Institute of Technology (ranked 161) in Bhubaneswar listed 33 LPA from Texas Instruments as its highest package, and the second largest, for 25 LPA from Amazon.

Ranked 179, DIT University in Dehradun listed its highest package with 30.64 LPA from Comvault and 30 LPA from Amazon.

Shri Ramdevbaba College of Engineering and Management in Nagpur, Maharashtra, ranked No.146 on NIRF, has been listed by Service Now with its highest package at 33.6 LPA, while RMK Engineering College of Chennai (ranked 154) gave it 25 LPA from Amazon. listed on. ,

Most of these institutes have claimed on their websites an overall increase in their placement numbers in 2021-22 as compared to the previous years.

‘Skills on Genealogy’

Industry experts are not surprised that offers are pouring in for students from lesser-known colleges as the way companies are now hiring has changed.

Kamal Karanth, talent expert and co-founder of Xpheno, a specialist staffing firm, told ThePrint that companies are going for skills, not pedigree. “Over the years, companies have realized that the kind of investments they were making in graduates of elite colleges were not really paying off and hence the value of premium colleges became questionable. It was this start-up that started the trend of hiring from lesser-known colleges over the years and has since spread. ,

He adds: “Companies are looking for people with specific skill-sets and more industry readiness rather than pedigree, so it should come as no surprise that students from lesser-known colleges are getting larger placements.”

Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder and CEO of staffing firm TeamLease, said, “I consider this to be good news in terms of campus hiring as there is market demand and hiring is happening. However, I am not so sure what to do with the huge salary package. The average salary of engineers has remained stagnant in the range of Rs 6 to 10 lakhs.
